Yesterday we played the new game again, this time in some undisclosed location in Northern Africa. I am leading the British attack while Eric is guiding the German defense. Click smaller for bigger, etc.
This was an attack scenario, the British soldiers in the foreground needed to secure or destroy the German held bunker. Since it's a desert and all there isn't a lot of cover for the British, but the dug in Germans were pretty well set.
The game opened with the obvious move of a British advance towards the ruins while the Germans simply waited. An assault should be a faster charge, but in this situation the top priority had to be securing cover of some sort!
The Germans had an obvious advantage with their fortified position, but that's the way of things. In this game the Germans moved very little, Eric placed them well to begin with so they had no need to manuver. They just stayed put laying down devistating fire on anything that moved.
Shortly into the turn you can see things are going poorly for the British already. One soldier on the left flank is already dead, one is Lightly Wounded, and the bottom fellow is in a state of Panic and almost fled off the board! Notice the British are all still grouped behind the ruins.
Finally I got some decent movement rolls and the British advanced in a classic pincer strategy, a few move off to the East, one to the North, the rest move into the ruins. The Germans were in deadly danger now!
Except that as you can see, the two to the East were killed before they got very far. The guy going North is now wounded though he did eventually make it to the valley under the bridge, it was too little to help. The guys moved into the ruins and were promptly pinned down by stupidly accurate German fire.
In all this the Germans suffer only a single casualty, their Medic was killed while trying to treat a minor injury.
It was a fun game, although I lost. The British lost 2/3 of their squad and didn't really get anywhere at all.
We played again and switched roles, that time Eric lost.
