Last year at GenCon Eric and I saw a new game, Shadows of Brimstone by Flying Frog Productions. We were intrigued, the game concept looked good, and we have several other FFP games that are all quite good. The basic premise is that of a dungeon crawl, but instead of wizards and dwarves, the adventuring party is composed of Cowboys. So it's an Old West dungeon crawl, and that's a pretty good idea.
Now us being us, we reasoned that we like making games. And frankly, once we had the idea it wouldn't be all that difficult to create our own Wild West Dungeon, as it were. And so now, almost a full year later, I have begun this task.
We merged two of our existing game universes, TheDeep fantasy environment and Hombre the western game, giving us cowboys that can explore senselessly evil and populated areas. Specifically, a haunted mine. And so TheDeep Mine is the name of the game.
I'll update more frequently, at least for a bit, but for now it has just started. I have written the Rules for the game, painted the main characters (adventuring party), painted an number of monsters, and created Event, Monster, Treasure, and Equipment cards for the game.
This seems like a lot, and it is, but there's much more to do.
I have three of the twenty four needed terrain tiles mostly done. They are built and painted, but need details added.
I have several monsters, and some "Big Bad Guy" figures, but I'm really struggling to come up with some more monsters that will fit in an old west mine environment. Or at least a fantasy version of that. Goblins and gelatinous cubes don't seem right.
I also need more Events, Treasure, and am desperately needing at least a solo play test. I have a feeling there are a number of situations that will be fairly common that I haven't thought to put in the rules.
I'll see about getting some pictures and posting them up soon. And I hope to continue posting updates on this project.
