Starfighters! Mission 2

Mission 2: Wounded Eagle

Raven 1 -Jazzly “Riot” Oxton
Raven 2 – Brizzy Joyce
Raven 3 – Giovanni Swisshelm
Raven 4 – Melissa Martinek  (replacing Aliyaan while she recovers)

Jazzly launched from the flight deck and banked around slowly to watch her squadron take off. Joyce and Swisshelm were fine, she was really watching Raven 4. The fighter still had damage from the last mission that hadn't been repaired, but it seemed to be flying fine. The pilot, Melissa Martinek, was new to the squadron. She was assigned as a replacement while Aliyaan was in sickbay. Her record was fine, she excelled at ranged fighting, wasn't as good at close in dogfighting, but overall was a competent pilot. Her takeoff was just fine, so Jazzly moved back to the lead position.

"So...." Giovanni's voice came over the comms. "Where we goin'?"

"Heading 2-1-1" Jazzly replied, her tone cutting off any more conversation.

After some time the green light on her comms board pinged and turned amber. That was it, they were out of passive comms range from the base.

"Listen up," Jazzly addressed the squadron. "A recon ship got a little too cloe to whatever they were snooping on, and they took some hits. They're sitting in an active asteroid field way too close to the enemy. The ship is damaged and needs time for repairs. we're going to make sure they have that time."

"Who are we epecting?" Brizzy asked.

    "Snakes." Jazzly answered flatly.

"Um..." Martinek mumbled, probably not intentianally across the comms.

"Viper or Serpent class fighters" Giovanni clarified without further comment. Every squadron used their own slang, there was no reason Martinek would know any of it.

    "We're here" Jazzly called out.

"And so are they" Brizzy answered.

Fighters close in, the Vipers screaming in with boosters engaged. The enemy is splitting its force, half racing forward and half hanging back.

"Here they come," Jazzly said calmly. "Vipers, so don't get too close if you can avoid it!"

"And watch those asteroids!" Jazzly snapped as she clips an asteroid herself, thankful for her shields. The rocks moved fast!
The approaching Vipers open fire, the Ravens respond in kind. There's no real results except from Brizzy. Her lasers score damage on Viper 3.

The Vipers scream in, getting close enough to engage the Ravens in dogfights all across the asteroid field. Most of the fights aren't decisive, but Viper 6 tangles with Jazzly and damages her fighter.

Rolling out of the fight Viper 6 doesn't even see Melissa come roaring in, lasers flashing. Viper 6 explodes.

A Viper damages Giovanni in a dogfight. Brizzy loses a Dogfight, but banks hard coming out of it, and flares Viper 5 into flames.

Banking sharply away from the burning Viper 5, her cannons burn through Viper 3, blowing it out of the stars.

Lasers flash between fighters, missing or skipping off shields. Viper 1 chases down Giovanni, bracketing him with burning laser shots, eventually forcing him to Break Off and leave the area.

Viper 2 Rolls in to strafe the recon fighter, and is smashed between two asteroids as they go hurtling through space. It explodes from the impact.

Melissa swoops around the asteroids, and blasts Viper 1. All four guns hit, shattering the small fighter.

Brizzy swoops in along side the recon ship, and runs straight into a hurtling asteroid. Her ship explodes!

Giovanni re-enters the area, after pulling himself together. The fighter that forced him out having been destroyed probably helped.
Jazzly comes screaming in, Shoots past the recon ship, and vaporizes Viper 4.  That ends the enemy ships.

Mission Success!

After Action

Raven Squadron collects 8 RP (3 for the Recon ship survival, 5 for shooting down fighters.)

Total RP – 15

Brizzy Joyce is fine, and her fighter is quickly repaired. Seems smashing into the asteroid looked worse than it was.

All the other pilots are fine, and ships repaired, except for Raven 1. It's not fixed fully. It starts next game with 1 damage and no Armored Cockpit.

Aliyaan is ready to return to the squadron, but Jazzly isn't keen on that. Aliyaan's injuries make her a liability, and Melissa is working out fine. Flight leader Oxton transfers her out, so she won't be back.

The rules on asteroids aren't real clear. They say they move d10" in a random direction, then later say to deploy them in patches (3"x5", 4"x6", etc.)
I chose to move them individually.  That makes then crazy dangerous, and very unpredictable. I like that, but it will need to be used sparingly.
