I've found a bit of time to keep moving on these, mostly an hour here, and hour there, ten minutes there, etc.
While I was waiting for things on the road board to dry (glue, paint, etc), I worked a bit on the Grand Stand board. This is a separate board, 24" x 8" meant to sit along side the main board. It will be a spectator place, and add to the look. It will also hold the damage cards, and the Race Cars should be able to be parked here when not in use, or when waiting selection.
It's a separate piece so I can, in theory, use it along side any race board current or future.
The Grand Stand in progress |
The stands are layers of birch plywood on a pine base. It's crazy solid! The tower thing (observers, announcers, press, who knows?) is balsa and matchsticks. The canopy/roof supports are pine, so nice and solid.
The road board is finished, minus decorative elements like signs and rails. I still need to do a final spray of glue to secure the flock, then I will do the signs.
As you can see, the roof of the tunnel has been placed and covered as well.
Missing signs and rails, but otherwise complete |
The cave in it's finished glory! Or as close to it as it gets. Inside the tunnel it was simply too dark, so I added some lights to it. I tried some nice amber ones, that gave it a sort of cool look, but barely. They simply don't give off enough illumination to see by, so it was back to white.
I still think it looks nice, and most importantly, it works.

And this photo is just for fun!
